Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) — online insomnia test

Mark the answers that describe your sleep, provided the difficulty occurred at least three times a week during the last month.

1Sleep induction (time it takes you to fall asleep after turning off the lights)
2Awakenings during the night
3Final awakening earlier than desired
4Total sleep duration
5Overall quality of sleep (no matter how long you slept)
6Sense of well-being during the day
7Functioning (physical and mental) during the day
8Sleepiness during the day

Interpretation

Each of the 8 items scores 0–3, giving a total of 0–24. The first five items cover night-time sleep (ICD-10 insomnia criterion A) and the last three daytime functioning (criterion C).

  • ≥ 6 points — the authors’ cut-off (93% sensitivity, 85% specificity).
  • ≥ 8 points — the optimal cut-off in the Polish validation (94% sensitivity, 84% specificity).

The score helps with diagnosis and with tracking treatment, but insomnia is diagnosed by a clinician.
